It has been said “You know you’re Dominican if you waste ALL your money in the summer time buying “frio-frio” (RED flavor)”. I’m sure these two girls would agree, even if only one of them has one. Frio-frio, which means cold-cold, is one of the most popular refreshments in the DR, sometimes known as yun-yun, guayao, and cepillao, or maybe something else depending on where you are in the country, but is very much the same wherever you get it. It’s made of shaved ice, chopped by hand from a large block of ice that sits in the middle of a wooden cart, surrounded by flavored syrups like strawberry, cherry, pineapple, tamarind, etc. It sure helps cool you off in the tropical heat.

These two girls live in a small village between Maimon and Cotui where you can stop and buy fresh local crops, usually delicious pineapples. I bought one there yesterday for thirty pesos, about a dollar. It was wonderful. > http://williamsonsbeauty.tumblr.com/
